Don’t get me wrong – I love me some Netflix. It’s like a smorgasbord of every movie imaginable (well most of them) and even includes dessert or did when they served up a streaming app for your smartphone for free. That was just a few weeks ago.
Here are 3 reasons why I feel Blockbuster will overtake Netflix
- Selection
- Price
- Staying power
Selection:
Upon first visiting a Blockbuster now, knowing that new releases will be there and I won’t have to wonder if they will have a certain movie due to a contract dispute.
Price:
Netflix used to be a no-brainer. 2 discs at a time and free streaming (of mostly b-side movies) for about $15.00. Well worth it, until they decided to separate the two packages. Now, it is hard to justify paying for a limited selection of discs AND streaming content. I would be happy to pay for both…if the quality of the selection were the same for discs and streaming. Unfortunately, they aren’t.
Staying Power:
How many of you have ever been to a Blockbuster surveying the landscaping, but they are also starting to compete again. Just pop in on a Sunday – $0.50 movie rentals (cheaper than Netflix and Redbox) and they recently started offering a trial package that includes unlimited movies for $8 per month. After 30 days, the price jumps to just $15.
A deal really, considering:
- No 30 day waiting period for new releases
- No late fees
- A HUGE selection – Blu-ray movies and games included
- No limit on the number of movies you can rent in a day
- Access to their through-the-mail service
Overall, it seems like Blockbuster just may win this battle. What do you think? Remember, any good business is good at adapting with change. Sometimes it just takes a mis-step by their competiors. Leave a comment on who you think will dominate the other in the coming year.
