While there are a lot of social networks to sign-up for, probably one of the easiest social networks to join and start using has to be Twitter. While most networks require you to add friends and start following people, Twitter takes a different approach.Instead, all you need to do is sign-up (which takes about a minute) and then you can begin looking at posts from other Twitter users and can interact with their content by tweeting, retweeting and following those users.
To help you get started with learning Twitter lingo, check out this Infographic on how to Twitter, complete with all of the steps you need to sign-up, select a username, and begin following and tweeting to others on Twitter.
Back in 2009, there was a major land grab for Facebook vanity URL’s. What this meant was that a lot of people ended up with really bad URL’s – that they couldn’t change. Fast-forward three years later and Facebook seems to have been listening because now you can change your Facebook vanity URL username. While this is great for those of you who got stuck with a bad vanity URL — think anything with underscores or dashes — this means you can now fix that and continue building your brand via social media.
Before you get all excited though, there are three caveats to changing your Facebook vanity URL
You must have 200 Facebook fans before you are allowed to make this change
Changing your URL means you will also lose any search engine positioning you previously had
Your old URL also won’t redirect, so if you have it on business cards, a website, flyers or in email signatures, you’ll need to change it STAT!
For those of you who are ready to change your Facebook vanity URL, watch this very brief video on how to change your Facebook vanity URL username:
For those of you using Facebook Groups, one thing you’ll notice that as you add new members, your Facebook Groups cover photo will begin to show photos of your members – it is essentially creating a collage of your group members.
While this looks great when you have just a few members, as your Facebook Group grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to see the photos. Additionally, a Facebook Group cover photo of your group members might not be very representative of what your group is actually about.
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to change your Facebook Group photo cover along with a video.
One of my favorite (and often most-overlooked) Facebook features are add interests lists. Facebook ‘add interests lists’ are a tool to let you quickly and easily organize your Facebook Newsfeed into individualized lists.
Why organize your Facebook Newsfeed with Add Interests list?
One of the biggest challenges with using Facebook is that after we’ve friended a lot of people and liked a lot of Facebook Pages, eventually our newsfeed becomes too much to mange and we begin to miss updates from some of the Facebook profiles and pages because they’re simply too much content to go through.
With Add Interests Lists, we are able to better separate our Facebook Newsfeed so that we’re able to see relevant updates just by clicking on one of the lists that we’ve created. What I like most about this is that ‘add interests lists’ work when you’re visiting Facebook from your laptop, your tablet and also from the Facebook mobile app.
What can I include in Faebook Add Interests Lists?
The great thing about Add Interests Lists is that you can mix and match Facebook Profiles and Facebook Pages so that you see updates how you want to. For instance, I have a social media resource list which I use for browsing content from my favorite social media channels. I also have one for Final Cut Pro resources as well as one for updates from business partners and one for family among others.
Enough about Facebook Add Interests Lists, how do I create them, how do I access them, how do I order them, how do I subscribe to them? Watch the video below.
Pinterest, a social network with around 11.7 million plus monthly visitors, is the fastest growing social network (until something better comes along). Now I know what you’re thinking – another social network to join, how do you find the time?
Unlike other social networks, one thing that sets Pinterest apart is that it isn’t about games or apps or tweets nor is it about having to approve a friend request in order for someone to look at your updates. Instead, it’s all about images (and videos), so lets get started!
What top 10 books would I recommend for you if you are getting started with social media or are currently using it and looking to get better at it and improve your engagement with fans and customers? Here are my top 10 social media books with an explanation as to why I believe they are important to you and how they can help you improve your online engagement on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others.
One of the biggest challenges with using Facebook on your mobile phone is that the current functionality does not lend itself to being very useful. If you’re just going to use it to share photos and to update your friends on what you’re currently doing, it works great; however, when you add in the ability to manage Facebook Pages, things get complicated.
For anyone who has a Facebook Page, you know how important it is to be able to respond to fans and also to be able to track how well your page is doing, if it is being seen, and if fans are engaging with your content. Luckily, Facebook seems to be listening and announced Facebook Page Manager last week, which serves as a separate app for managing your Facebook Pages from your iOS device.
As we spend more time on Facebook, connecting with friends and liking lots of Facebook Pages, it becomes a little cumbersome to manage all of the updates that come through our Facebook Newsfeed like photos, videos, status updates, deals and links on a daily basis.
When you add in going mobile and trying to check your Facebook Pages when you’re on the go, you’ll quickly notice that unless you’ve spent a lot of time organizing your friends and pages into interest lists, you’ll spend more time scrolling and less time actually consuming updates from your friends and the pages that you have liked.
Fortunately, there’s an app for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users that makes it very easy to separate out your Facebook Pages called alerts for Facebook.
While Klout is a tool to measure your overall social media influence, it does not measure Pinterest. Fortunately, there’s another social media tool that can help you measure your influence or “pinfluence” on Pinterest called Pinpuff.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. You’ve set up your Facebook Page and you’ve started to build your fan base and you’ve noticed that you’re not getting a lot of comments on your Facebook Timeline or you find yourself overlooking them for one reason or another. With 95% of Facebook Pages never responding to commentsfrom fans, this means a lot of missed opportunities to connect with current fans and lost opportunities to strengthen your brand in the process. So why do we overlook comments?
Why we overlook comments:
