App of the day: Facebook Page Manager

Facebook Page Manager appOne of the biggest challenges with using Facebook on your mobile phone is that the current functionality does not lend itself to being very useful. If you’re just going to use it to share photos and to update your friends on what you’re currently doing, it works great; however, when you add in the ability to manage Facebook Pages, things get complicated.

For anyone who has a Facebook Page, you know how important it is to be able to respond to fans and also to be able to track how well your page is doing, if it is being seen, and if fans are engaging with your content. Luckily, Facebook seems to be listening and announced Facebook Page Manager last week, which serves as a separate app for managing your Facebook Pages from your iOS device.

App of the day: Alerts for Facebook

Alerts for Facebook appAs we spend more time on Facebook, connecting with friends and liking lots of Facebook Pages, it becomes a little cumbersome to manage all of the updates that come through our Facebook Newsfeed like photos, videos, status updates, deals and links on a daily basis.

When you add in going mobile and trying to check your Facebook Pages when you’re on the go, you’ll quickly notice that unless you’ve spent a lot of time organizing your friends and pages into interest lists, you’ll spend more time scrolling and less time actually consuming updates from your friends and the pages that you have liked.

Fortunately, there’s an app for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users that makes it very easy to separate out your Facebook Pages called alerts for Facebook.

App of the day: Facebook Timeline Cover Slicer

Facebook Timeline cover photo template appHow many of you saw yesterdays eyetrack study on the new Facebook Timeline and where our eyes are immediately directed towards? You guessed it, the Facebook Timeline Cover photo area is the top place for drawing attention – and it rightfully should be, because it is significantly larger. Unfortunately, while there is a lot of clear evidence that suggests we should spend time creating compelling Facebook Timeline Cover photos, I have come across a lot of people who have yet to take advantage of this or they have produced work that isn’t up to par. Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression – make it a lasting one, so let’s get started using the FREE Facebook Timeline cover photo app.

Facebook Page changes in 2012

Another year, another Facebook Page change. Over the past few days, I’ve been producing a series of videos on Facebook Page changes in 2012 that cover the new changes you can expect when all Facebook Pages are switched over to the new layout on March 30, 2012. For those of you who want a quick rundown on what has changed and how to apply these changes, I’ve put together a complete guide below — complete with a downloadable PDF file.

Not only are Facebook Pages getting a facelift in 2012, but I can definitely tell you you’ll really like these new features once you get used to them. They add depth to your Facebook Page, something that was sorely missing from past iterations. In addition, page owners will get a lot of new features that they can use to upsell their content. And by upsell, I don’t just mean products. If you primarily post updates about news, you can highlight some of your best posts, use the pin to top feature – to keep polls at the top of your Facebook Page, and add layers of content by adding in Milestones.

So enough about all of these exciting new changes – take a moment to view the following image, which highlights Facebook Page changes in 2012. There’s a lot there, so I’ve broken them down to make it easier to digest.

3 types of questions to ask your Facebook fans

Know your Facebook fansPop quiz: Who are your top fans on your Facebook Page? For most Facebook Page owners, you probably don’t know this valuable information…but you should.

The bread and butter of any company who is using social media to build engagement with fans and potential customers isn’t the number of fans you have, nor is it the amount of cash you make off it. Rather, it is the relationships you build with your customers.

Why is this important?

Without fans who are engaged, it’s like trying to swim against the current. You’ll eventually get to your destination, but it will take you twice as long (if not longer). One other thing to remember, simply asking a question is not the key to finding out who your top fans are. What it will do is help stir interest. As a Facebook Page owner, you’ll want to pay attention to who responds and make a mental note on people you see responding on a recurring basis – these are the fans you want to  focus in on and learn about, because they seem the most likely engaged fans because they’re responding often.

Below are three types of questions you can ask your fans starting today to help you learn more about them and to help you better engage with them.

5 FREE Facebook landing page creation tools

With the new Facebook Pages launching in just a few weeks, is your Facebook Page ready? For those of you who need a quick rundown on the new features, be sure to check out my YouTube playlist where I have put together detailed videos covering each new Facebook Page feature. One feature that I’m sure a number of you are going to be interested in are custom landing pages.  Although Facebook has done away with the ability to set a dedicated landing page for non-fans to land on, Facebook Page users will be happy to know that landing pages have increased in size. Previously, landing pages were just 510 px. Now, they have increased significantly to 810 px. This means lots more real estate to engage with fans!

For those of you who don’t want to spend time learning how to write HTML code or designing graphics, here are 5 FREE Facebook landing page creation tools to help you build better landing pages to connect with current fans and to engage with new ones.

8 simple and effective Facebook Page status updates you can start using today!

8 types of effective Facebook Page status updatesThe best way to engage your Facebook fans is by posting status updates (duh!). What most people fail to realize is that it isn’t just about posting status updates (and lots of them). Instead, you need to take a step back and create more meaningful updates that will enchant and intrigue your fans to where they want to comment, like or share your status updates with others.

Sounds a lot easier said than done, doesn’t it? In addition to focusing on the quality of your status updates, you also need to be aware of Facebook’s algorithm called Edgerank.  Edgerank is an assigned score that determines your placement in someone else’s Facebook Newsfeed.

Edgerank scores focus on three main variables; popularity (how many likes, comments or shares a post gets), fan interest/relevance (how often do fans interact with your page – if at all) and recency (when your status update was posted). Each of these criteria are combined to then determine a Facebook Edgerank score, which pushes your content up someones News Feed.

So how do I get more comments, likes and shares to improve my Facebook Edgerank?

It is important to realize that it isn’t about the sheer quantity of updates, rather it is about the interactions and buzz generated from those updates.  I certainly recognize that coming up with status updates and ideas to post on a regular basis can be challenging.  That’s why I have put together a list of status updates that you can start using today to improve the levels of engagement with fans which can increase comments, likes and shares your updates receive.

Note: before writing any status updates, remember the golden rule of marketing – “know your customers.” Modify your status updates with the below recommendations so that they are unique to your Facebook Page and your customers.

Why your Facebook Page does not need Timeline to succeed

Lately, I’ve had a number of people emailing me – asking when will I get Timeline on my Facebook Page. Unfortunately, Facebook Profiles are just now receiving this update – and it usually takes users time to adapt to these new changes, so that means Facebook Pages will need to wait…a while.

But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You see, while Timeline is a great tool for Facebook Profiles — it did help Tim Tebow amass 1.4 million Facebook subscribers, Timeline for Facebook Pages isn’t so compelling – there are a number of reasons why you don’t really need Timeline and here’s the proof.
