10 Tips for performing a Facebook operation [Infographic]

Everyone remembers the game, Operation, right? In a recent study, 82% of social media users think Facebook is a good place to interact with brands (tweet this stat). If your Facebook presence isn’t where you want it to be, it might be time to consider performing a Facebook operation.

What exactly is a Facebook operation?

While operations are usually permanent, a Facebook operation is where you tweak certain areas of your Facebook Page and can always go back and change them as the times change.

For example, you may have a great cover photo on your Facebook Page; however, maybe the only areas you need to operate on are to make your landing pages mobile friendly.

By performing an operation on your Facebook Page, you can greatly improve your Facebook presence and make your page more appealing to fans.

Remember, the more appealing and inviting your Facebook presence is, the more your fans will want to share the great content, photos, and more that you post.

Is a Facebook operation necessary?

52% of social media users find a business’s Facebook Page more valuable than their website (tweet this stat). I expect that number to continue to grow as more businesses are using their Facebook Page for leads.

If you’re ready to go under the knife and perform a Facebook operation on your Facebook Page, the team at ShortStack put together this great infographic with tips on different areas you should consider operating on.

4 steps to a better Facebook link thumbnail image

One of the things that has always frustrated me when sharing content on Facebook is controlling the Facebook link thumbnail that is generated when you post a link on your Facebook Page.

This can be particularly frustrating if you’re sharing a link to a website that has an image that is perfectly optimized for Facebook, yet Facebook doesn’t seem to find the image.

As a result, you’re left to either upload your own image like this Facebook post or deal with an image that doesn’t fit the space like the one you see below.

Bad image, bad message

While you’re at Facebook’s mercy for images, ultimately, this can affect how fans see your brand.

For example, if I chose to go with the improperly sized image from above, I’m basically sending the message to my fans that I don’t care how my content looks. I just want them to read it.

Posting quality content is ideal. It is equally important when sharing content on Facebook to have rock-solid images as well. These include the Facebook link thumbnail image Facebook sees when you share a link, photos included on photo posts, etc.

If you’re stuck in this situation, you have three options.

Option 1: Go with the images Facebook finds

While option 1 is the easiest to do, it can do the most harm to your brand because of the message it sends to fans – you don’t care.

Option 2: Facebook photo post

The second option is a little better. It does mean you’ll need to create a new, larger image (we recommend 600×600 px). In this situation, you’ll end up with a large image that’s visually appealing. To include your link, simply paste your link in the status update box and post it.

I like this option, but it means you need a graphics program (or a designer) to create something for you. You’ll also be devoting more time to finding images that fit the size of the post.

Option 3: Use a custom Facebook link thumbnail image

Hopefully you’re not satisfied with the first two options because option 3 is exactly what you need.

If Facebook happens to return images that are not properly sized, instead of settling, you can upload your own now. This way you can determine what Facebook link thumbnail image gets associated with your posts.

How to get more likes on Facebook [infographic]

How to get more likes on Facebook

When you talk about how to get more likes on Facebook, people often think you’re strictly talking about getting people to like your Facebook Page. There’s actually another type of like that’s more important to Facebook users. This is getting people to like your content that you post on Facebook.

Why should I try to get more likes on Facebook?

As I mentioned, it is more important to get people to like your content than to like your Facebook Page.

This is because when people like your Facebook Page, this only gets them to the door. It doesn’t get them to enter and to begin participating (engaging) with you.

When you get someone to begin liking your content on Facebook, this means that you have taken an even bigger step and you have their attention (if only briefly).

The good thing is that when you get more likes on Facebook content, not only have you helped out that user by providing something they found valuable (they liked your content, right?), but they’ve also told their friends, and also told you what kind of content that you posted that they find valuable

This can do a number of things.

For instance, when someone likes a piece of content, you just took the first step to building a more meaningful and long-term relationship with that user.

Additionally, they have told you what kinds of content they find interesting. This provides extremely valuable data on what types of posts you should be making on Facebook. You also now have the opportunity to grow that relationship with those users because you know what they want. All that’s left to do is post it!

So what types of Facebook posts should you consider making? Here are a few that are guaranteed to help you get more likes on Facebook:

  • Posting photos receives 53% more likes
  • Posting photos receives 104% more comments
  • Posting photos receives 84% more click-throughs
  • Posting 1-2 times per day gets higher engagement than posting 3+ times per day

So what other ways can you get more likes on Facebook? This infographic covers the ones I mentioned along with a number of others that can help you get more likes on Facebook content and improve your relationships with your audience.

Facebook 20 Percent Rule – Do You Measure Up?

Facebook 20 percent rule
In early January, Facebook rolled out updates to cover photos, ads and images.  No, they didn’t change the sizes of them again.  Instead, they have implemented a Facebook 20 percent rule.  What the Facebook 20 percent rule aims to do is control how much text you use on your Timeline cover photo, ads, and in images you want to promote. Before you start to panic though, remember, the Facebook 20 percent rule is there to help you…become a better marketer for your business on Facebook.

Facebook Reply Links Means Threaded Comments [video]

While Facebook is great at helping us connect with friends and family and businesses, as the volume of comments grows, it can make it difficult to follow the conversation.  Fortunately, they have rolled out a new feature called Facebook reply links.

Previously, anytime you commented on a Facebook status update, your comment would get posted at the bottom of the comments thread. This made it difficult to follow the conversation because you had to read through multiple conversations. With the introduction of Facebook reply links, it’s now a whole lot easier to reply to comments because you can reply to any comment and it will keep comments threaded (and organized).

Here’s an example of the old form of Facebook comments and Facebook reply links in comments.

How to Create Facebook Check-in Deals [video]

Facebook check-in deals

If your business seems to be struggling with getting more exposure on your Facebook Page, it might be time to learn how to create Facebook check-in deals.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with check-in deals, here’s a summary of check-in deals.

What is a check-in deal?

A Facebook check-in deal is a way to incentivize customers to check-in to your business on Facebook from their mobile devices like a tablet or a smartphone. Anyone with a business (brick and mortar or online) can create a check-in deal to reward customers.

Once someone checks in to your establishment, you can reward them in one of four ways:

  • Individual deal – Offer a discount to an individual for checking in to your business.
  • Friend deal – Offer a discount when your friend brings a friend (or multiple friends) and they check-in together to your business
  • Loyalty deal – Offer a discount, freebie or dollar amount off a purchase to checking in a pre-determined number of times
  • Charity deal – Your business makes a donation to a charity when someone checks in.

But wait, I heard Facebook check-in deals were being replaced.  While InsideFacebook.com published an article back on February 29, 2012, declaring that Check-in Deals were no longer being used, I’ve checked with my sources at Facebook and check-in deals are sticking around!

How Do You Get Followers on Twitter? [Infographic]

One of the questions I often get asked about is how do you get followers on Twitter? I’ll be honest, building and growing your network of followers on Twitter can be very challenging, especially if you’re new to Twitter.

Most Twitter newbies have grand plans to amass thousands of followers overnight.  The same can be said for people who have been using Twitter for years.  In most cases, you feel like you’re doing work, but not seeing the needle move.  Unfortunately, growing your followers on Twitter does not happen that quickly.

If you want to get followers on Twitter, you have to work at it. This means using Twitter search to find people you share a common interest with. In addition, one of the key things you can do to get followers on Twitter is to be interesting. This means tweeting about a specific topic, sharing an article you found interesting, or even a photograph you took.  There really is no wrong way to share content.  Basically, share what you think others might find interesting.

So how do you get followers on Twitter by sharing content? Sharing content is part of the equation. No one wants to follow an account that doesn’t tweet.

Once you have started tweeting, what you need to do next to get followers is to learn how to retweet.

For those of you who don’t know what a retweet is, it’s sharing someone’s tweet with your own network. There is also a science to sending a retweet.

How do you get followers on Twitter?

Take a moment to review this infographic on “The Art of Getting Retweets.”  By tweeting your own updates and retweeting others, it can help you get followers on Twitter at a much faster pace.
