3 CEOs share their best alternative to using a Facebook like-gate

Facebook recently announced they were banning the use of like-gating on Facebook Pages starting November 5, 2014.

This was a shock for a lot of businesses that have a Facebook Page because it meant they needed to make changes to their Facebook marketing strategy and find new ways to get people to like their Facebook Page.

While this affected businesses that manage a Facebook Page, how did it affect companies that specialize in tools to help you create Facebook landing pages?

I put together a list of alternatives to using a like-gate to attract new likes on your Facebook Page.

But I wanted to hear from the companies that create Facebook landing page tools to find out what changes they would make to help attract new likes or fans to their Facebook Pages.

To help you understand their approach to like-gating on Facebook, I gathered three of the top companies and asked them what they would do differently now that you won’t be allowed to use like-gating on Facebook landing pages.

Moving away from like-gating

While the announcement that like-gating was dead may come as a bit of a shock to businesses, this didn’t come as a surprise to many of the landing page companies.

Many of them were already moving beyond just offering tools to create Facebook landing pages.

For example, Shortstack recently launched a new campaign builder to help you go beyond just creating landing pages on Facebook.

They now allow you to build campaigns to use anywhere that can help you grow your fanbase.

Why like-gating isn’t a big deal

Earlier this year, Facebook launched a redesign of Facebook Pages.

When this initially launched, Facebook landing pages were initially removed from the new redesign and re-added later.

This was a clear indicator that Facebook might be making further changes to landing pages.

Couple that with the fact that Facebook has been making subtle changes such as removing the ability to set a default landing page over the past few years and you can clearly see that like-gating was bound to go away sooner or later.

So what are the CEO’s who create social media tools to help you create Facebook landing pages, contests, and promotions doing instead of using a like-gate? Let’s find out.

One on One: Facebook Apps Made Easy with WP4FB

Podcast interview with WP4FB founder, Wilco de KreijThis interview with Wilco de Kreij, Founder of WP4FB, is the second in an interviews of interviews with professionals who are doing amazing things with social media.

I am very honored to have the opportunity to interview the founder of WP4FBWilco de Kreij.  I first met Wilco in August when I was researching Facebook Landing Page tools and really thought his product was innovative and especially useful for business owners who use WordPress for their blogging platform and also maintain a Facebook Page.

There is quite an abundance of Facebook Landing Page tools available to users.  Most of them are either very expensive or require that you have some knowledge using HTML.  This is what I feel helps set WP4FB apart from most Facebook Landing Page tools.

I hope you enjoy this interview with the founder of WP4FB, Wilco de Kreij.

5 Reasons Why Your Facebook Page Sucks

5 reasons why your Facebook Page sucks

At the urging of your friends, you created a Facebook Page for your business, but around one year later, the party is over, your Facebook Page is hanging on by a thread, and you’re still stuck with a low number of likes and very little engagement from your Facebook Page fans.

If you’re like most businesses stuck in this situation, you’re quick to point fingers that Facebook simply doesn’t work.  Actually, it does.

The problem isn’t Facebook – it’s your business that’s the problem.

Now before you get mad, I’m not saying that you have products that are necessarily bad. Chances are you have really great products that provide a solution to customers.  What’s missing though is that you have bad Facebook Marketing for your business.  That’s why your Facebook Page sucks.

Here’s what you most likely did for your Facebook Marketing.

  • You looked at other major brands in your field to see what they were doing (good)
  • You copied them (bad)
  • You read articles that gave stock examples from major brands (good)
  • You copied them again (bad)
Hopefully you’re seeing a pattern here – while there’s nothing wrong with using major brands like Starbucks as a guide for your own Facebook Page marketing, you have to remember, you’re not Starbucks or Coca-Cola or any other major major brand so don’t expect to amass millions of fans overnight. Building a social media strategy takes time.  So why does my Facebook Page suck?

5 Facebook Timeline cover photo ideasFacebook Timeline – love it or hate it, it’s here to stay as of March 30, 2012.  While embracing change may be difficult for some people, with the new Facebook Pages Timeline layout, there are now a lot of GREAT benefits for page owners.  We’re going to share with you 5 ideas for Facebook Page Timeline cover photos to help you make the most of the new Facebook Pages and to help you attract more visitors and customers as a result.

So before we begin, lets talk about why you would want to use a Timeline cover photo.

With Facebook removing the ability to have fans land on a default landing page, page owners will need a new hook to get fans excited about their Facebook Page. Enter Timeline cover photos. Not only are they the first thing fans see, but they can really help show off your business and what you have to offer. And we’re not just talking logos or photo of yourself. If you’re a musician and you write your own songs, share photos of you in the studio. If you have a product, show photos of that product – it could be the product when it is getting manufactured, a finished product, or even a sample product you are working on. This way you let fans know who you are and what you have to offer, and it gives them better insight into what you do and helps get them excited about it too.

So here are 5 ideas for Facebook Page Timeline cover photos to consider posting on your Facebook Page.

Facebook Page changes in 2012

Another year, another Facebook Page change. Over the past few days, I’ve been producing a series of videos on Facebook Page changes in 2012 that cover the new changes you can expect when all Facebook Pages are switched over to the new layout on March 30, 2012. For those of you who want a quick rundown on what has changed and how to apply these changes, I’ve put together a complete guide below — complete with a downloadable PDF file.

Not only are Facebook Pages getting a facelift in 2012, but I can definitely tell you you’ll really like these new features once you get used to them. They add depth to your Facebook Page, something that was sorely missing from past iterations. In addition, page owners will get a lot of new features that they can use to upsell their content. And by upsell, I don’t just mean products. If you primarily post updates about news, you can highlight some of your best posts, use the pin to top feature – to keep polls at the top of your Facebook Page, and add layers of content by adding in Milestones.

So enough about all of these exciting new changes – take a moment to view the following image, which highlights Facebook Page changes in 2012. There’s a lot there, so I’ve broken them down to make it easier to digest.
